Communist Daughter – Lions & Lambs EP
So I am a week behind on this one – my apologies. BUT, it is always better late than never so here is finally a review of Communist Daughter’s newest EP, Lions and Lambs. If you have not heard of this up and coming six-piece from the midwest I suggest you start paying attention. Lead singer Johnny Solomon (formally of the critically acclaimed band Friends Like These) once took a complete hiatus from music in 2007 as he battled with addiction. Lucky for us, he could not leave the music behind for long. He soon gathered five friends together (one of which, Molly Moore, is now his girlfriend) and began making music again.
Their newest 6 song EP is similar sounding to their debut album, Soundtrack to the End, but still provides us with some fresh new music to hold us over until their next full length release. Similarities are found both in the music and lyrics with a mix of softer acoustics and catchy rock tunes layered with beautiful harmonies that serve as a backdrop for lyrics about overcoming addiction and loss. My only question mark on this album was the decision to include a very subtle remix of “Speed of Sound”, a personal favorite off of their last album. It almost seems like they were in need of one more song for the release so they threw a tweaked version of an old favorite in there. Fortunately though, this is where my criticism ends.
Every time I hear a new song from them I never truly know what musical genre to put them in. Sounds ranging from 60′s rock to folk-acoustic are all found in just a six song sampling on the new EP. Maybe that is what makes me love them so much. They almost read my mind as I think, what if they made a song that sounds like this?
With only a couple releases under their belt, I am looking forward to the bright future they have not just in the Twin Cities music scene but nationwide.
